A softer way to start talking about debt

Debt is heavy—not just because of the money, but because of the silence around it. Here's a gentler way to start.

01

Start with yourself, on paper

Before you tell anyone else, tell yourself the full truth. Grab a notebook or open your Notes app. Write down every debt: mobile loans, sacco loans, family loans, shopkeeper credit, buy-now-pay-later. Write the amount, who you owe, and roughly when it's due. That's it. No plan yet. Just the list. Most people feel lighter just from doing this. The unknown is scarier than the known.

02

Then tell one trusted person

Not the whole family. Not social media. Just one person, like a partner, a sibling, or an old friend. Say something simple: "I've been carrying some debt and I want to talk about it out loud." You don't need a solution ready. You just need to break the silence.

03

Approach lenders before they approach you

If you know you can't pay on time, reach out first. Most saccos, banks, and even mobile lenders will listen if you explain. A short message like "I want to pay but I need two more weeks" often works better than disappearing. Silence damages trust; honesty repairs it.

04

Pay one at a time

You don't have to clear everything at once. Pick the loan that stresses you most, often the smallest one, or the one with the highest interest, and put extra there while paying the minimum on the rest. When it's done, celebrate quietly. Then move to the next.

05

Debt is a season

You didn't get here in one day. You won't leave in one day either. But every honest conversation, every small payment, and every list you write is progress. Debt is a season. It's not who you are.
